FIT
The utility dress is a fully, fitted style. This vintage pattern is equivalent to a Modern XS (US 0/2 or D 34), always check your measurements to the listings measurements to better understand the fit.
- Size (14): Bust 32″ or 81cm, Waist 27″or 68.5cm, Hip 35″ or 89cm
USE
This is a tissue paper pattern for recreating the styles shown on the envelope front. The original pieces are perorated tissue paper and should be handled with care. The instruction sheet has a cutting chart and the sewing instructions. The envelope back has back view of styles, a text description of styles, a guide to pattern pieces, material requirements and sewing notions.
In order to recreate this utility dress you will need to purchase your material, notions and anything you might need for embellishing. To test the fit before using expensive fabric, purchase muslin & recreate the style in a basic version. It is advisable to make a paper copy when resizing or altering the design.
- Notions: thread, buttonhole twist, seam binding, hooks & eyes, snaps, buckle, 5 or 9 buttons.
- Yardage (2): 54”x2-1/2 yds or 137cmx2.3M Note: Original 1940s fabric layout charts assume a narrow 36″ or 39″ fabric width. Because modern linen crepes are typically much wider (140 cm / 55″), you will require significantly less yardage than listed on the envelope back! (Generally, approx. 2.5 to 3 meters is plenty for most sizes, depending on chosen sleeve view).
Modern Fabric Recommendations for the Buyer: This pattern works best with medium-weight fabrics that drape elegantly but hold a crisp press for the skirt pleats.
- Top Modern Choice: A 140 cm wide pure Linen Crepe (approx. 160 g/sqm). The twisted crepe weave gives the utility dress a stunning, authentic fluid drape that plays beautifully with movement, while the linen provides the crispness needed for the collar and pleats.
- Other Suitable Fabrics: Challis in Rayon/Viscose or Wool, Lightweight Cotton Chambray, or Silk Crepe.
